Vicky Sanderson: I Can’t Live Without My…

Summer’s nearly in the dust (!?) so it was high time for us to dust off our Can’t Live Without series. And home décor and design writer, Vicky Sanderson, was kind enough to sit down with us to talk about her busy life as a journalist. She writes about home décor and design in the Toronto Star and her work has also appeared in outlets including Canadian Living, House & Home, Reno and Décor and Active Life. She frequently shares tip, tricks and trends on Canada AM, Breakfast Television and CH Morning Live. With such a busy schedule, it’s no wonder she needs a little Funky Bunch to shake off the stress. Read below for the 5 things she Can’t Live Without…

1. My Books – Even though I read and write all day, I could not exist without them when I’m off the clock. I read pretty widely – fiction, biography, history – everything except self-help books, which may explain a lot!

2. In the kitchen, I love, love, love my Salad Xpress Food Processor. It slices, shreds, grates or crinkle cuts right into your bowl – without taking up all 70950-2the space of a food processor. It’s a toss-up whether I love it or my slow cooker more. Frankly, life without either would be a sad affair.

3. CBC Radio – Talkie stuff in the morning, music in the afternoon. We are so blessed to have this network. Also I need regular fixes of classic movies on TCM. I never watch reality shows – I think they’re part of an international conspiracy to keep people lazy, stupid and distracted from the stuff that really matters.

4. Weleda Wild Rose Smoothing Facial Lotion – Not going to go the Botox route – I could never afford it, and I worry about what kind of message it would send to my three daughters weleda_wildrosefacelotion_900x900about women and aging. But DO.NOT.TRY. to take this miracle cream away from me! A large part of my personal plan for aging successfully is simply to become more and more amusing, thus ensuring ongoing invitations to more and better parties.

5. When I’m down, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch’s cover of Good Vibrations never fails to make me feel good about the world again. Ditto for Aerosmith’s Dude Looks Like a Lady!

The Cayman Islands – A Destination for Foodies and Fun Seekers

We’ve just returned from The Cayman Islands having spent the week checking out what all three islands – Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman – have to offer. On this visit, we brought along media from some of the country’s best outlets including Mercedes-Benz Magazine, the Huffington Post, Dabble, the new Away Magazine and many more. Our group was in the destination to experience the annual Cayman Cookout event, hosted by Michelin-star chef Eric Ripert and friends including Anthony Bourdain, Daniel Boulud, Marcus Samuelsson and Canada’s own, Lynn Crawford to name just a few.

We made sure our media had some truly unique experiences including a one-of-a-kind farm-to-table lunch in Cayman Brac, a picnic on deserted Owen Island just off Little Cayman (they kayaked over to work up their appetites!) and numerous meals at fine dining restaurants in Grand Cayman. And because they had to work off all that food, we kept them busy with a snorkel trip to Stingray City, and visits to Starfish Point, the Cayman Motor Museum, Hell Post Office, Camana Bay, a relaxing afternoon at the Silver Rain la prairie spa at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman and much more.

Check out the photos from our trip and let us know in the comments if you’ve been to the Cayman Islands or hope to go soon! You can catch all of the action for our various visits to the beautiful Cayman Islands by following our Instagram feed @fathomco. Many thanks to Karen Kwan, Natasha Mekhail, and our own Mark Johnston for providing some of the photos below.

We aren’t the only ones who have fallen for this line of eclectic print dresses, tops and more. Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Beyoncé and Anne Hathaway, to name just a few, are equally smitten. If you haven’t slipped on a Canyon dress yet, you don’t know what you’re missing. clovercanyon.com

Jenny Bird horn necklace
The current collection from Canadian jewelry designer, Jenny Bird, is probably one of her best yet. With so much to choose from, it’s lucky this line is so reasonably priced. Our favourite pick has to be the large Wildland necklace. Talk about a statement piece. Available in a variety of hues, we scored the white for summer. But hurry, the entire summer collection is going fast.  jenny-bird.com

Island Inspired Living Comes to Canada

Nearly a year ago, we met with Toronto-based, London-trained interior designer, Kate Thornley-Hall, to discuss the idea of creating a collection of interior products inspired by our favourite holiday paradise, the Cayman Islands. After months of collaborating, sweating deadlines and flying back and forth to the destination (ok, that last part wasn’t hard), we’re thrilled to announce the launch of the new KATE THORNLEY-HALL CAYMAN ISLANDS COLLECTION!

The collection set against the backdrop of Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman.

The collection set against the backdrop of Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman.

The collection will initially include contemporary wool and silk hand-woven carpets made in Nepal as well as flat-weave rugs, throw pillows, fabrics and decorative pillows. A collection of lifestyle products will soon follow. Follow along on social media with #kthcayman

“My designs have long been inspired by my love of colour and bold patterns,” says Kate. “I instantly fell in love with the natural beauty and cool sophistication of Cayman and wanted to channel that into a collection that would recall what I experienced – the extraordinary flora and fauna, the rich natural history, the casual touches and friendliness of the people and the vivid turquoise waters that were teeming with sea life. We all want to hang onto that feeling of a relaxing beach holiday and my new collection captures that essence, but in a sophisticated way that works for the modern home.”

The designer, Kate Thornley-Hall.

The designer, Kate Thornley-Hall.

The Kate Thornley-Hall Cayman Islands Collection designs and colour palette are inspired by what’s above and below the sea in Cayman: starfish, coral, turtles, sea stars, palm trees, trellis work, the Cayman Brac parrot and an old schooner sailing ship are all represented. Kate even paid homage to the destination’s heritage in a Cayman toile design which is a clever take on the traditional that features various points of interest and highlights in the Cayman Islands including Rum Point, the “Old Homestead”, Starfish Point, the sugar bird and more. With the exception of the hand-woven carpets made in Nepal, the entire collection is proudly designed and produced in Canada. View the lookbook here.

Designer Matthew Gallagher returns to World MasterCard Fashion Week as the Cayman Islands Stylemaker

Following his breakthrough debut at World MasterCard Fashion Week in 2013, women’s ready to wear designer, Matthew Gallagher, is poised to once again make his mark on the runway as he unveils his Fall/Winter 2014 collection. Not only will Gallagher close out the week as the final show at World MasterCard Fashion Week on Friday March 21 at 8:00 pm, but the designer will also be celebrated as the 2014 Cayman Islands Stylemaker, an innovative new recognition program recently announced by the Caribbean destination.

CI-StylemakerWordmark

Fathom Co was instrumental in creating the Cayman Islands Stylemaker program for the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism (Canada) and worked closely with The Collections, a privately owned designer management company based in Toronto, to feature Gallagher as its first recipient.
